The term “bigger is better” doesn’t always apply when it comes to traveling. As an outdoors enthusiast, I’ve learned that some of the biggest fun I’ve had has often been in the smallest destinations. While Delaware doesn’t take the prize for the smallest state in the United States, it comes in a close 2nd place.
A Little Something for Everyone
Right in the center of the state, you’ll find Kent County, and the capital city of Dover. That name may ring a bell with racing fans, as it’s also the home of Dover Motor Speedway. In addition to the races, there’s so many events in central Delaware. From the groovy vibes of Hippie Fest to the scenic landscapes of the Amish Country Bike Tour, there’s always something going on-and a little something for everyone.
Finding a place that has things to make everyone happy is important in our household. While my happy place is in the woods making new feathered friends, my boyfriend, JP, tends to be more into betting than birding. Instead of feeding the birds, his happy place is feeding the slots at the casino. When we can find a destination that gives both of us those happy moments, it’s a win-win for everyone.
I’ve recently been hearing about central Delaware and it’s definitely moved up my travel-to-do list. Yes, there’s birding and betting to put smiles on both of our faces, but there’s also so much more. Here’s the top 5 reasons I’m loving central Delaware at the moment.
5 Things You Have to Do in Central Delaware
Birding
Ok, so let’s start with my favorite-birding. The area is located within a migratory path known as the Atlantic Flyaway. Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Smyrna is known as one of the best spots for birding in central Delaware. Covering over 16 acres, it stretches across 8 miles along Delaware Bay. You can take the 12 mile wildlife drive or you can explore by foot on any of their 7 trails. The trails are scenic, but trails in Delaware are also known for being flat. That’s a big plus for me because it makes it easier to lug in the heavy photography equipment. You’ll definitely want to bring it along because there’s so many species that you’ll be able to spot-especially during migration.
Casinos
Alright, so since we started with my favorite, we’ll talk about JP’s favorite next…the casinos. Even if you start your morning in the woods, there’s no reason you can’t end your day at the poker table. You can check out Bally’s in Dover where you can enjoy table games, slots, and a great resort experience. They also have a luxurious spa onsite, so after you’re done with poker, you can also indulge in some pampering. If you want to add some horse racing action into your itinerary, you’ll want to check out Harrington Raceway & Casino. They also have plenty of slot machines and table games to keep you busy as well.
Craft Beverages
For a small state, they really stand out in their craft beverage scene. The state has even put together a fun craft beverage trail called DE On Tap. It’s free to play along, and is a great way to get to know about all of the cool places like Painted Stave Distilling. Located in Smyrna, it was previously a 1940’s downtown movie house. Or you may want to visit easySpeak in Milford and try their Orange Creamsicle or Berry Lemon Fixx. And after you stop by easySpeak, you may even want to check out a real speakeasy. At the Cured Plate Libations and Lounge you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back into the 1920’s. Make sure you get your passcode when you make your reservation though-you’ll need the code to be able to get in.
And visit-worthy beverages don’t always have to include alcohol. There’s also great beverage options for us looking for our caffeine fix as well. Coffee lovers will want to check out The House of Coffi in Dover and Dolce in Milford.
Beaches
As a Florida girl, it’s in my blood to be drawn to the beaches. Sun, sand, and water will always be on my top list of things to do, and the bay beaches of central Delaware offer all of that and more. In addition to just relaxing and spending a chill day lounging in the sun on Pickering or Woodland beaches, you may also want to check out Bowers Beach for a special occurrence that happens once per year-the spawning of the horseshoe crabs. This only happens May-June though, so make sure you plan accordingly if you want to see it.
Shopping
I don’t think we can bring up a trip to central Delaware without talking about the tax-free shopping. This is a huge perk that you have to take advantage of on a trip to the area. Admittedly, I’m not usually a big shopper when I’m traveling. But let’s face it, who doesn’t love saving money? In this instance, I’m bringing an extra bag along to stock up on all of my finds. From super cute boutiques like Blooming Boutique in Milford to awesome antique shops, there’s plenty of options, no matter what you’re shopping for. And you’ll save money on all of it since it’s tax-free.
